What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling involves the use of a handheld device with multiple fine needles that create micro-injuries as they are moved over your skin in stamping motions. This process stimulates collagen and elastin production, two nutrients that are vital for healthy, glowing skin. Microneedling treatments are designed to help your skin appear fuller and your complexion more clear. As the needles pulse up and down to precisely pierce the skin, the body is signaled to begin healing itself. Your provider can choose the length of the needles depending on the goals for your skin. Longer needles reach deeper to help heal deeper skin concerns like pitted acne scars.

One of the most popular microneedling devices we use at Body+Beauty Lab is the SkinPen® Elite. This microneedling technology uses a pen-like device to deliver needle stamps into the dermis layer of the skin. As it is moved across the skin it delivers 100+ stamps per second and creates up to 1600+ microchannels in the skin.

What Is RF Microneedling?

The techniques used in RF microneedling are similar to those in microneedling, except RF, or radiofrequency, is used to enhance the process. It uses heat to penetrate deeper into the skin making it appear smoother and tighter in comparison to microneedling without RF. The handpiece is gently moved over the area as with microneedling, however with RF, small heat waves are emitted through the needles and into the skin. The RF energy heats at levels that are cumulative and can create lasting results.

At Body+Beauty Lab, we offer two premium options for RF microneedling, Secret™ RF and Morpheus8. Secret™ RF uses 25 to 64 evenly spaced, gold-plated needles which allows it to deliver radiofrequency at differing depths, making it an effective and efficient treatment option. The Morpheus8 device delivers fractional RF energy to deeper layers of skin and fat by using longer needles to reach into the subdermal tissue. These needles can be interchanged and adjusted to reach various depths.

Do Microneedling and RF Microneedling hurt?

Clients report mild discomfort from microneedling. The discomfort is reported to be slightly more noticeable with RF microneedling due to the additional heat added to the treatment. However, most practitioners apply numbing cream to the area before the treatment, making the process less uncomfortable.

How long does it take to recover from Microneedling and RF Microneedling?

Thankfully, the downtime is minimal for both of these skin regimens. You are typically able to resume your normal activities right away. The redness and tenderness from the treatment typically resolve within the first 24 to 48 hours after each session.

How long do Microneedling and RF Microneedling treatments take?

Microneedling treatments typically take 15 minutes to an hour but can take a few hours depending on what areas are being treated. RF microneedling takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete and can extend to a few hours depending on the area or areas being treated.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

To prepare for your appointment, ensure that you avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and irritating skin products (i.e., retinol products, salicylic acid, tretinoin, glycolic acid, and other exfoliants) at least one to two weeks prior to treatment. It’s also important to avoid waxing at least a few weeks before your appointment. On the day of your appointment, ensure the area is cleaned with a gentle, non-irritating cleanser. Make sure you are well-hydrated before and after your appointment.

Can I have other skin care treatments performed between Microneedling or RF Microneedling appointments?

Yes, you can have other skin care treatments performed in between microneedling/RF microneedling appointments. However, it is always important you consult your provider before proceeding with any additional treatments to ensure safety and compatibility. Treatments generally allowed between appointments include: chemical peels, laser treatments, hydrafacials, and topical treatments such as vitamin C, serums with growth factors, and retinol products once your skin has healed.
